Yolo Bypass

Pastor Dave Koppel

Recently, I had an opportunity to be in California with my family. We had a wonderful trip. Sometimes we just need a time of refreshment and renewal to be able to reflect on where we've been and where we're headed. Not to mention that it was just great to be with my whole family.

On our way back to the San Francisco airport, I saw a sign that cracked me up. It said, “Yolo Bypass.” It turns out that the Yolo Bypass is a means of flood control for the Sacramento River. In the 1800s, there were severe floods when the river overflowed. More recently, the people of that area and the government came together to form Yolo Bypass to divert the water so it wouldn't inundate the cities along the river.

However, the reason the sign got my attention is because the acronym Y.O.L.O. Y.O.L.O. stands for “You only live once.”

But as people of the way, as followers of Christ, we have a Yolo Bypass. We can bypass the idea that you only live once because we know there’s more than the life we live here on earth right now.

Jesus Christ is our bypass. Rather than everything ending with our earthly death, Jesus helps us move into eternal life with Him and all followers of Christ.

So, the next time you see a sign that says Yolo or somebody puts the acronym up to tag a picture, just remember that we have the Yolo Bypass.

In His grip,

Pastor
